I remember when I first decided to learn electric guitar. I had an attraction to the instrument for many years but it was only when a friend of mine got one as a Christmas gift and I was able to hold it in my hands that the passion ignited big time. I couldn’t wait any longer and decided there and then that I HAD to have one.

Most people kind of graduate to electric after playing acoustic guitar for a while, there’s kind of a time honored rite of passage there! Personally I think its good to be able to strum and play some chords on acoustic first, it will definitely give you head start once you start in on electric.

An important point is to think about which direction you wish to travel musically. Learning electric guitar for Jazz is vastly different from Indie, or Blues from Metal you get the idea. Once you know what it is you’d like to be able to play it will simplify the search to find the right electric guitar lessons for the direction you wish to travel.

The most inviting thing about guitar is that it’s so accessible; there are no set rules as to how you must learn electric guitar, its open and up to you. My advice is to take advantage of all the resources available to us these days. By combining all of them you’ll progress quickly. So take private lessons along with an online site for how to play electric guitar, DVDs, books use it all in combination.

Heres a final word of warning I know you may be dying to play a particular song or riff but you must earn the right to be able to play it through dedication and practice. That means starting with really easy things and gradually building up your technique until it’s high enough to play what you want. You have to be patient, practice and earn those riffs.

So what do have from all of this? You’ll give yourself the best chance to learn electric guitar by practicing a little bit each day, using a combination of 1-1 tuition with online lessons and building up your technique gradually. Good luck.
