Trying to decide which of the iPod nano holders are right for you? This article will help you figure out what holder (or holders) you really need.

Choosing an iPod nano holder can be more complicated than you might expect. There’s a huge variety of cases out there, for different purposes, and in different styles.

At the low-price range you’ll find silocone film coverings, faux leather flip cases, and all sorts of plastic belt clips. Beyond that you’ll see workout holders, fashion beauties, and wind/weather protectors.

Where will you use your nano?

Close your eyes and imaging for a minute. See yourself using your iPod. Are you working out? Listening while you commute to work? Will you need to protect it from the weather? Are you a klutz (like me) and worried about dropping your nano?

Now that you’ve thought about it, you probably realize you need a couple different holders. For example, I use a leather and snakeskin holder during my commutes and have a Belkin neoprene armband for my workouts.

For Working Out:

Exercisers look for how to keep the iPod nano out of the way while still having easy access. We need to protect the nano from the bumps and drops that inevitably happen when exercising.

If you do a solid workout, you’ll want to get a sweat-resistant armband. (You don’t want your nano getting wet.) I have a neoprene armband with a plastic film front cover and a cord keeper. Armbands do have a downside, as it can be hard to see the display if you want to change the playlist.

If you’d prefer to carry your iPod nano when working out you’ll want a slip-proof cover. I suggest a silicone cover thick enough to also provide a little shock absorption if (or is it when?) you drop it.

At Work (or While Commuting)

Some professions require a conservative, professional image. If a put-together appearance is critical you’ll want a leather iPod nano cover. You can get them in wallet-fold or flip-top styles. They’ll project the image you need. Consider a leather case that has a lining to protect your nano from scratches.

Is your job less staid and conservative? You can probably use any casual iPod nano cover. (lucky you) Think about whether you’re more interested in practical features or in something stylish, and read from the next paragraphs.

Practical Features:

If you’ll be outside much you might consider waterproof cases. Also think about whether you need a belt clip or perhaps a snap to help you keep track of the case.

If you’re a klutz like me, you’ll want to protect your iPod nano against bumps and drops. Ditto for if your nano will be rattling around at the bottom of your purse or briefcase. Look for a hard case, or at lease one with reinforced corners.

Last but not least, style:

While a lot of iPod nano owners stop at practicality, some of us also look for fashion. We want our nanos to look a little less geeky, or to express a little style. Try for Cloe Dao’s high-energy prints or Gilty Couture’s metal cases with Swarovski accents. My website has a review of designer nano cases to show you some ideas.

Know what you want now? Go forth and buy! If you’re still not quite sure, stop by my website for a few ideas. Whatever you decide, you’ll enjoy your new iPod 3G nano.
